Can anyone offer information on areas of West Virginia that are more prone to flooding than others? We're looking to relocate somewhere in the Parkersburg, Clarksburg, Charleston triangle. Nice areas include Hurricane and other areas just south of the interstate as well . That's a lot of geography for us to be educated on and we would love any and all input. Thank you very much to all who respond.

Here is a link: http://157.182.136.83/Website/fema/viewer.htm (broken link), you will have to zoom in close to the areas you're interested in for the map to show the details.
Anywhere you live in WV, you are at risk for floods. Flash flooding are common in WV, you'll have to look at the property you're looking to buy very closely and pay attention to everything surrounding that property also because during flash floods, not only can you be affected if you live close to a river or creek, but if you have uneven ground it can collect quickly on your property and possibly flow down into your house. Also, if you live close to a hill that water may run off of and collect in your yard, you may be at risk for some sort of flooding. Mudslides can occur as well, so having your house very close to a hill or mountain or if your house in located on a hill or mountainside, it can put you at risk for that when there are generous amounts of rainfall. Flooding can happen anywhere at anytime though, so don't let it scare you off from living in WV. It's a beautiful place. I lived there most of my life and my houses never was flooded or slammed with a mudslides, but I've had water come very close to my back door and even had to replace a storage building once. Mostly, the problem with floods in WV, is that people still try to drive through the water. Just because it may look like you can drive through it, it's not worth the risk! Here is another link on statistics of flooding in WV: http://librarycommission.lib.wv.us/news/2007Campaign.pdf (broken link), this gives good info on the amount of casualties by year and how to prevent yourself from hazards and such. Hope this helps!

The 4 cities you mentioned are not flood prone areas. The triangle in between is largely rural, but for the most part is not a flood area either. Because of the high mountains, you can collect a lot of run-off water quickly in some areas. Then for several days, the rivers will run higher. I would not be overly concerned though with flooding in that area. Parts of southern and eastern West Viginia are at greater risk.

Yea, I would probably go with somewhere near Clarksburg. Even though you are still at some risk there, because anywhere near a river, or stream is at risk but I have lived in Elkins for almost 20 years and have never heard of too much flooding in the Clarksburg area, its only about 50 minutes to an hour away

Default Flood Mitigation

For the benefit of anyone who finds this page while looking for answers to flooding problems in their community, the process to secure federal assistance to prevent flooding is outlined at http://upperfalls.us/coalriver/. This is the process we discovered that will hopefully, one day, end flooding on Coal River. I hope this might be useful to someone.

Also for those who don't know, flood insurance is not expensive if you can get it. But you have to have that specific type of insurance, it's not covered under normal policies. It's underwritten by the feds, and there's a 30-day waiting period.
