Hi all,

We're making the move from Manhattan to somewhere in lower Westchester and are just about ready to decide on Irvington (good commute for hubby to GC, beautiful town, good public school options, large lots, nice vibe). We will most likely send our kids to Solomon Schechter of Westchester (located in White Plains) for elementary school. Google Maps says this commute would be about 24 mins (using either 287 OR non highway route), Is anyone familiar with this particular commute during morning rush and afternoon pick up times? Thank you in advance!

I take 287 East every morning. It's a schlep, plain and simple. I love Irvington too, but it really will be a pain to put yourself in a position to drive across 287 every morning. Afternoon drive home should be better if you're picking your child up before the 5 PM rush, which you probably are. Big difference just driving west 4:30PM to 5PM. You do have Route 119 as an alternate, but there are so many traffic lights so it's only a great option when there is an accident. Good luck with this.

Thanks for the honest answer. Do you think the 24 min estimate is just best case scenario and its more like a 40 min drive daily in the am? Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

That school is in Hartsdale on 100A isn't it? Since you only have to be on 287 for a couple or so exits from Tarrytown to 100A, it's probably the quickest. There is often a lot of traffic on 287 but since you don't have to be on it long it's not a big deal. Route 9 from Irvington to Tarrytown can be kind of slow though. Unfortunately there isn't a good straight line route between Irvington and the school.

The alternate is to take Sunnyside to Taxter to 119 and pick up 287 there or take 119 to 100A. If you live on the southern end of Irvington you could take route 9 south to Ashford Ave in Dobbs Ferry but the section going through Ardsley can take forever.

Anyway you go you're probably looking at 30 minutes.

I plugged my commute into Mapquest and they underestimated MY drivetime by 9 minutes or so. . I'm guessing you're right with your guess, give or take five minutes. Traveling east in the county is ALWAYS slower than any north south destination---just like Manhattan I guess.

TDNY: the upper school is in Hartsale, but the lower school is located at 30 Dellwood Road, White Plains

Thank you everyone so much for the response. Any one with other suggestions welcome to add in their two cents! This is my very first post to city data and its invaluable info. I will also call the school and ask to speak with some families who make the daily commute.

Btw, the school hours are 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. I guess we'd need to be on the road around 7:50 am.

My husband and I both work in White Plains. We eliminated Irvington from our short list for the 287 factor. I dont mind being in a car for 30 minutes, but I do mind sitting in traffic for 30 minutes - personal preference. Also, please bear in mind the 287 west traffic heading home on Fridays - they can be a killer

Thank you to all. Based on these responses and from talking to a parent who is doing this commute, I have eliminated Irvington as a place to call home. We will stick to eastern side of lower Westchester and I am going take a look at Harrison as well (add it to the list along with Scarsdale, Mamaroneck, etc.)

You may also want to consider White Plains. If you're sending your children to private school anyway, you may as well take advantage of the (somewhat) lower taxes WP has to offer.

personally I use NJT 107X to port authority then use shuttle to 42nd street then harlem line to whiteplains. Way more fun than 287 and immune to traffic. NJT107X has its own lane during AM rush!!!!!
