What's the best way to get to Manhattan from the Rivertowns (Yonkers, Hastings, Dobbs, Ardsley, etc)? Do a lot of people drive from there? How is the area of Manhattan/Bronx right by the Westchester border?
Trains and it's not even close unless you have lots of money for parking and have a specific need to drive. For example, it would make sense if you were going somewhere in northwestern Manhattan that might be a bit hard to access via metro north. Even then, driving to the Bronx, parking on the street and taking the subway might be better, depending on the specifics of the situation.
As far as the Yonkers/Bronx border goes, the southwestern side of Yonkers is the bad part, but the Riverdale neighborhood that is to the south is probably the nicest part of the Bronx. I don't know what it's like in the immediate area of the border, but it definitely gets nice and suburban pretty quickly.
I would say that majority of us commute by train, as it is very convenient, efficient and relatively fast. I board the train at Dobbs Ferry and it's a 33 minute train ride to Grand Central on the express.
