Good luck, viliang!
Perhaps you didn't, but it read like a whine. In fact, you didn't really respond to the OP at all IMO, it was more like a superficial CA <--> NY comparison, closing with the suggestion not to move. Consider that the OP was fromEastern Europe, not CA, so perhaps her take on CA doesn't exactly line up with your own?

Interestingly, I have

We would greatly appreciate any leads, especially from Californians and people who lived on the West Coast and have an idea what life is like here. You are talking to somebody who has never been to the East Coast and is originally from Eastern Europe.

The relocation specialist suggested we check out the Westchester County cities. We are looking for good public schools that are not pressure-cookers, cultural diversity, walking to school/ library/ parks, low crime rate, reasonable commute, easy access to good food (any coops out there?). Our conservative house price range is $750.

So tell me: Where do you live? Why do you like it? Who your neighbors are? Do your kids bike to school, have playdates after, go to private tutors, play competitive sports, have friends that speak 7 different languages, what's their childhood like? What does work/ life balance look like in your community?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Go )!
Hi there viliang,
we are also moving from the Bay Area. Just wishing you good luck with your search.
Maybe we will bump into each other somewhere along the way.

It's nice in Northern Westchester. I grew up in Mahopac New York so I was right on the border of Putnam/Westchester, the northern part.

I've been in Virginia since 2006 and went home to visit Mahopac in 2011, and it didn't really feel like home anymore. Being military I lived in a lot places, Germany was the farthest place I resided. I actually left New York in 95.

When you move there be sure to explore all of New York, the srate is not just a city all though the city seems to run the state, it's a little backwards.

Upstate is pretty, go take a visit to places like lake Carmel and Patterson, vey quaint country feel to those towns. Go see how the colors of the fall leaves reflect off of Lake Carmel, it's very pretty.

You will also have access to Connecticut and other parts of New England which offers it's own unique things to do.

Be sure to catch an Army football game at West Point, it's a very enjoyable experience and the stadium is also set in gorgeous location. The military museum can be interesting as well if you've never been.

One last thing, take in the view from the Bear Mountain overlook, you won't regret it.

Check out the rivertowns - hastings, dobbs ferry, irvington, ardsley. Great schools, lots of diversity, walkable (depending where you live - we walk everywhere), and there's actually quite a few norcal transplants I've met, including myself. I feel very at home here and in fact I find the people A LOT friendlier here than where we came from (SF) overall. Yes there are things I don't love here, but overall it's a plus esp because of the community and friends we've made and that trumps everything. But everything else really isn't so bad. Except for winters. And the food....won't find much great food....still haven't figured that one out. And yes, everything really is quite expensive but there's ways to get around some of that.
