My wife and I went apartment hunting in Westchester (primarily White Plains) about 6 months ago. We were real concerned about the quality of housing as well as the realty practices. We ended up in Stamford where we could find pretty decent pricing on a 2 bd 2 bath at substantially less cost than Westchester. There is a lot more rental development in Stamford than anywhere in Westchester. Lots of NYers here. Something you may want to consider.
Port Chester/Rye Brook is right there. I work in Purchase, it is a very nice town. As someone suggested, White Plains is also a good option. All are high priced as far as rents and real estate prices. However, with Westchester Ave running along all of these areas if you have no car, this is your best bet for transportation on the bee line. BTW I live in Stamford. Traffic on I-95 can be annoying but I get to work in about 20 minutes. There is also the train.
