It's a four billion dollar bridge...NY is going to whack us. It's better than constant upkeep on the old bridge though. I was just over it yesterday and they've obviously stopped any pretense of maintenance.

I wonder how much of the new bridge was paid for with federal funds, I also wonder what the bridge would have cost if built in another part of the country.

The high cost of living in the NYC area always inflates construction costs. I know the fed gave NY a loan for 1.6 billion with low interest for the bridge, but do not know about direct funding.
My understanding is its part of the NYS thruway, so the thruway tolls will pay for it. They are frozen until 2020, but I expect to see the bridge toll and the thruway tolls go up at that point.
I know one thing - I'm gonna carry on calling the new span the Tappan Zee bridge also, because that's an excellent name. I don't care what the politicians say it should be called.

IIRC, their application for federal funding was denied.

And its an entirely appropriate name for the bridge. The Tappan Zee was the name given to the wide, lake-like area of the Hudson roughly corresponding to the length of the Westchester-Rockland border, which is the exact body of water spanned by the bridge. Tappan is the word the Dutch formed from the word the local indians called themselves. Zee is the Dutch word for sea.
The fact that current governor Cuomo chose to name the bridge after his own father tells you all you need to know about this guy.

Oh my God! I couldn't believe it and had to look it up. The arrogance and conceit of the Cuomo's have no bounds. Maybe he should change his own name to Willie Stark. Now they're gonna' have to change all of the signage along with all the road maps to accommodate it's new name including everything that referenced the Tappan Zee Bridge. But what the hell? It's only taxpayer money. The next thing you know they'll be renaming the state after the Cuomo's. Maybe they can rename it Cuomochusettes?
It's too bad that the new bridge didn't collapse into the Hudson as Andy drove over it for the first time. But that would have been a waste of a '55 Corvette.

People will still call it the Tappan Zee. I've been over that bridge hundreds of times and only recently noticed the green sign that says:
Gov Malcolm Wilson
Tappan Zee Bridge
Putting his father's name on the bridge won't change anything. One day my grand kids will notice the sign and wonder who is that guy.
