Anyone know if there are any flights from any of the local airports in the Murphy area to connect with major carriers, or would one have to go to one of the large airports like Asheville or Chattanooga, etc?

I'd say either AVL or Knoxville, and neither are hubs where you can take many direct flights, depends on where you are heading to. Check the websites of those airports; they have links as to where they fly to and from. There is a Tri City Airport near Johnson City, TN but I doubt that is an option for you.

I fly a lot for my business and the best bets are Knoxville or Atlanta. Knoxville is closer by 30 minutes but Atlanta will give you more options for direct flights.

Thanks for the help. I hoped that with the several smaller airports close by one could catch a hop to one of the larger airports, doesn't seem unreasonable. Perhaps in the future (like us getting cable lol) it will happen.
