I looked at the motor vehicle website for NC and saw that taxes will be due on cars coming into the state for new residents. I tried to find out how much the cars would be taxed (based on used value?) but couldn't find any specific info on how they establish the amount of tax due. Does anyone have experience with moving into the state with a car registered in another state? Thanks!
From fading memory, as we did that in Sept 2001:
Took title, current state reg, insurance card to local DMW office.
A title transfer tax of ~3% of 'used car value', (they were pretty reasonable on their 'valuation').
Got new plate, got it inspected, got insurance for NC.
The only other 'tax' I know of is the annual tax on any/every vehicle one owns that goes to one's county; it is assessed on 'value', (again, pretty reasonable valuation, imo), and applies to cars, trucks, m'cycles, trailers, ski doos, snowmobiles, et al.

Here's a related question. How long can you live in AVL with other state tags before required to transfer registration to NC. That may be a DMV question.
The NC state DMV says, '30 days or accepting full time employment, whichever comes first'...
"If you’re new to the state, you must register your car at the end of 30 days or when you accept gainful employment (whichever occurs first).
You must register and title newly-acquired cars right away, or risk a citation."
Otoh, many of our friends who 'summer' in NC, not NC domiciled rez, drive their car(s) around with out of state plates with no prob. Many of those same people also have a car registered in NC, fwiw...

Yes, that is a DMV question. I believe it's about 30 days to get your driver's license, auto insurance, and vehicle registration. If you own the car outright, bring your clear title with you.
If you are planning to buy another car, wait until you get here. The sales tax on cars is only 3% (either on full price w/o a trade) or (trade in difference). Savings over most other states. Property tax on cars is city or county specific, your insurance agent is the best source of advice on that because it will vary. All in all, very reasonable.
Newcomers to the state get a break on the Highway Use Tax (HUT). Think of the HUT as a one-time registration tax. New residents will pay a maximum of $150 per vehicle to register their out-of-state vehicles. There's no sales tax on motor vehicles in NC.
From the DMV web site:
If the vehicle is owned for LESS than 90 days before applying for an NC Title, tax credit against the Highway Use Tax due will be allowed for the amount of tax paid to another state, upon submission of proof of payment.
If the vehicle was titled in NC after 90 days of purchase from a dealer, no credit is allowed. Full Highway Use Tax will be due on the purchase price, less any trade-in credit.
If the vehicle is owned for MORE than 90 days prior to registering in NC, you will be taxed on the vehicle’s value, up to a maximum of $150.00 tax.
Exemptions do not apply on vehicles where an assignment is made on an out-of-state title. Highway Use Tax is due on the value of the vehicle.

Are you a part-time or full-time resident of NC? There's quite a few folks who live in the AVL area for only a few months out of the year.
We will be full time residents of NC beginning May 1st. If I understand mm34b correctly there would only be up to a $150 transfer of registration fee from VA to NC per vehicle. A 3% registration "tax" didn't seem correct. I already paid 3% sales tax in VA when each of our vehicles were initially registered when new. 3% of value to transfer registration to NC would be huge. We also have a annual personal property tax on cars in VA.

You may have misconstrued, or I didn't explain it properly:

That is not the same thing as the HUT which you pay a max of $150 when you register your present car in NC.
e.g. You pay $32K for a new car. You get $12K in trade in allowance on your old car. You will pay "sales tax" per se of 3% on the $20K diff. $600. Most other states charge a lot more than 3% on the transaction, some are like 7% ...
Most other states charge a lot more than 3% on the transaction, some are like 7% ...
but few of them will then continue to gig you every year.
The $20,000 car with an excise tax a 7% = a once and done $1400.
In most states that gets wrapped up into the loan too.
How many years at what rate will it take to make up the $800 "savings" ?
