Hi everyone. We are strongly considering a move to Asheville, NC. and have some general tax questions - local, county and especially state.
We are self employed and work out of our house. We plan to rent before we buy. First, a question about the North Carolina state income tax. For easy math, let's use $100,000 as adjusted gross income. What is the current percentage and how does NC determine this tax? Can the amount then be applied to your federal income tax statement in any way? What city taxes do we especially need to be aware of if living in Asheville as well as county taxes? Any particular taxes associated with being self employed and working out of the house (no one comes to the house). Also, we have a 2001 Honda Accord. Will our vehicle be taxed? If so, how? Thank you in advance for any tax information. Look forward to chatting with everyone regarding Asheville and Western North Carolina. Good day!

Assuming you are itemizing, state income tax is a deduction on your Federal return. Those are Federal rules so that applies to any state. However, it gets added back in when you calculate your NC state taxable income.

By the way, we have a 2002 Accord and our tax in January was $52. Registration was $28 for the year.

I wonder, if there is big difference between living in asheville city or outside the city limits, when it comes to income taxes ?
