It is a franchise. I know the owner very well and he is a huge supporter of the local only scene. I do agree tho on supporting local businesses first. I have eaten at almost all of the BBQ joints here in Asheville and the surrounding area and have to say that JJ's BBQ (Moes) is some of the best. He is also one of the nicest guys in town. I visit it once a week either for lunch or a weekend treat. Luellas is 2nd on the list for me. 12 Bones is overrated IMHO.
The food at 12 Bones is very delicious! It just seems like everyone you talk to about BBQ automatically says 12 Bones when there are multiple other options equally good or better.
Went to 12 Bones the other day -- very good. Especially loved the jalapeno cheese grits.
Today we're going to Luella's. Chose Luella's over Moe's because Moe's doesn't have near as many side choices. To me, half the attraction of a good bbq place is the sides.
Not near Weaverville, but if you are flying in or out, Circle B Ranch BBQ by the airport is really good. It's attached to a gas station, so don't go for the ambiance. The owner started out with a carry out only place on Sweeten Creek called Big J's Bubba-Q.
We've tried everything-all good. They have turkey, chicken, and pork BBQ. The portions are challenging, especially the roast beef plate.
Warning: the fried chicken takes 30 minutes. People call ahead.
