Asheville officials believe the long-planned Interstate 26 connector project could stand a better chance of construction now that state lawmakers have approved a new formula for transportation funding that rewards highway projects for improving economic development and creating jobs.
Estimated to cost $500 million, it would involve adding new bridges across the French Broad River connecting to U.S. 19-23 north of the Jeff Bowen Bridge, widening Interstate 240 in West Asheville and building a new I-40/I-26/I-240 interchange on the western side of the city.
