My partner and I are looking to relocate, as is one of my partner's good friends. The two have worked in the restaurant business for years, over a decade, and a coworker from their past suggested that we all come to Asheville and open out pizza restaurant there. We're very serious about local produce, doing everything ourselves--down to making mozzarella--, offering vegan and gluten-free options, etc.

What I want to know is if there is a market for such a place in any of Asheville's neighborhoods. A few google searches have revealed that pizza joints aren't very hard to come by, and I'm worried that even if ours is "different" in the right ways, we'll fail.

There are a great many pizza places here. I can name about 10 really good ones off the top of my head, not counting the usual chains. Two (Pizza Pura and All Souls) opened within the last year. We have a good range of styles, and although I'm not sure I would guess that at least some of them boast local and handmade ingredients and gluten-free options. I would think you'd have to have some kind of special hook for a pizza place to stand out in this town.

Best pizza in Asheville IMO is Pura Pizza on Dept St. Everything else is pretty underwhelming. I have had the gee I wish that I could find good New York/Chicago style pizza conversation numerous times. If you can pull it off you will make a mint. I hail from New York and consider myself a pizza conoseur. Good luck!

There are numerous good pizza places in this area even in small places, like Weaverville's Blue Mountain Pizza. Might want to check surrounding areas and see if there is a need. Mars Hill is a very small town although a college there so that might be possibility. Anyone think of a place, Black Mountain, Waynesville, Swannanoa(Warren Wilson College), Marshall? Just random thoughts. IMHO what's needed is good bagel place or two!
AboveAverageBear what makes a NY pizza different?

If you would open a Portillo's Italian beef anywhere within a 50 mile radius of Asheville my wife and I would recommend you for Sainthood.

Lived 12 years in Germany. Learned to eat brochen, cold cuts, squishy soft boiled eggs and the like. Did not try to bring my ways with me. Lived their life and ways and came away richer from the experience.
