thanks,, my hubby and I have a budget of 200-450000, and my daughter will need to stay in the 150-175000 range. We have considered finding enough land to put a house on it for her and her 3 girls. My daughter would be happy with an acre.

Yes we were just there over the holidays,, unfortunately it was cold and rainy everyday so it was hard to show them around all the cool sites..

We adore the area, but are also considering warmer weather places too. We realize the Asheville area is around 15% higher than where we live now and higher than other places we are looking at. That is a concern.

15% higher, as in budget-wise? If your daughter has 3 girls, she will need 3 BR; if she can do without an acre of land, $175K to $200K might be doable, but on the outskirts of Asheville and in a different county other than Buncombe County. 1/3d to 1/2 acre is about average in subdivisions where she might want to be for companions and school friends for the girls. Building on land you purchase would be a major undertaking since you are not familiar with the areas, and searching for land can be daunting and expensive when you find what you like. The real estate market has been brisk here since the end of 2013 and predictions based on last year's sale are that it will continue to be steady. You might consider Hendersonville, Mills River, Waynesville, Weaverville, areas toward Black Mountain; although increasing your budget will open up more possibilities for you. Definitely come in the early spring and hopefully you will have better luck with the weather.
