I lived in Asheville for 3 years in my early twenties and loved it to death! Now in my mid-thirties, I am moving back this summer, this time with my husband and rising 6th grader. We are actually being transferred there with work, so at least one of us doesn't have to worry about finding a job, and I know the area and still have a couple friends around WNC. I would love to hear any recommendations about great middle schools and neighborhoods to live in for kids, since last time I lived there (being young and single) I obviously didn't pay much attention to kid-related issues. How is West Asheville for families/schools? We also may consider Black Mountain or other small surrounding towns if the schools are way better....Does Buncombe County have school of choice? My friend highly recommended the charter schools, but we can't enroll in them because the deadline is March, and we won't be there until June or July. Can't afford private. Any recommendations greatly appreciated! Cheers!

I personally love West Asheville. we did not move there because schools in the south were supposed to be better.
well, now my youngest goes to artspace in swannanoa, my middle child goes to Franklin School of innovation. both are charter schools and I am very happy with them, so are my kids.
franklin has an open enrollment period going on (6th - 9 th grade, adding another grade each year) They are on facebook as well (franklin school of innovation).
I really like small schools a lot better.

good luck!

I have heard good things about Weaverville schools but mine are much much older so no first hand. It is a good family town with a nice library, shops, bakery, restaurants, park on Main St. It is very close to Asheville so we zip in a lot. Easy access to the Parkway out Reems Creek for hiking. You can go home if you are able to accept things change.

Thanks for the info! I'm happy to hear that at least one of the Charter schools has open enrollment -- I emailed them and they said to definitely stop in when we arrive to see what can be done! Also, thanks for Weaverville suggestion -- I never spent any time there, really, but will check it out. Any additional advice would be welcome, of course!
