I didn't see a thread like this on the forum, so I thought I'd start one .

I am only starting to learn about the Asheville area. It's a beautiful region. Aside from commonly known destinations like the Botanical Garden, Biltmore, and the zoo park, what other destinations do y'all recommend for a day trip?

Dupont State Forest, Max Patch, Looking Glass Rock, Graveyard Fields, downtown A'ville, Craggy Gardens, Pink Beds, Southern Highland Craft Guild Folk Art Center to name a few...

Pearson's Falls is a nice spot for an hour or two.

Here is a wealth of information on this site: www.romanticasheville.com

(It is a misnomer ... not all about romantic places ... although you could consider many of them romantic when you get there. ) Enjoy !

Truly great stuff! And as Quilter Chick mentioned, a lot of these finds are listed on Romantic Asheville's website.

Are there any museums *worth* visiting?

I would love to learn about the *true* history of the region - be it good or bad.

The best museums are in Raleigh and well worth the drive and an overnight or two.

Hendersonville has a nice small museum of history of the area. Asheville may have one also, don't know. If you like Barnes & Noble, you can get some nice books on various areas, cities, towns, and their historical backgrounds in their 'local area books' department. Malaprops book store in downtown Asheville will also have many books about the local scene and history.

Not that close to Asheville, but the Mountain Heritage Center at WCU is excellent:
