Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I would like to know how much snow Boone really gets. I've looked at graphs and read all kinds of reports and get anywhere from 6 inches to about 50inches, annually. I know it will vary every year, but when it does snow does it stick around for a day or two or melt by afternoon? I know there are ski resorts there, but they manufacture the snow, right?
According to the federal government's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), Boone receives 35.5" of snow during an average season (NOV-MAR). Most of that occurs in January and February. The yearly record for Boone was the 1959-1960 season. They received 103.4".
We usually get 30-40" for the entire season. The earliest in November, latest in April but usually more like Christmas thru end of February. It will snow 3-4" each round and sticks for 1 or 2 days. I live on the Western slope of a ridge near Tennessee so I get 8" when Boone gets 4 but I have never had too much trouble with it.
I live in the upslope area out of Boone near the TN line as well and we've had 10 snowstorms this season so far, each dumping from 1-4". The earliest this season was Oct 28th, and the most recent was - today. The one from last night / today dumped 3-4". Eight of the 10 snowstorms this season had occurred before we even officially entered Winter!
Whether it sticks around for a day or two or more depends on how much of the area is shaded, if the temperatures rise, etc. Much of the time it melts off after a day or two.

Yes, well that was early in the winter last year. The total for stone mountain (on the NC/TN border that year was 120". My kids were out of school almost continuously from Feb through mid April. It was crazy. We regularly got a foot dumped on us in one day. This year, it has already snowed 24" up in that area. If you are moving to Boone, live IN TOWN! Otherwise, I hope you like cabin fever

I didn't say the STATE is on life support, I said that the r/e atmosphere over here is on life support. We know the market, and it's in the tank and will be for a few more years. Just the facts that's all. The area in the high country is a retiree area, if you have to work, we've said it before ... it's not where the action is. Sorry, we know how bad denial can be when you fall in love. We do wish you the best of luck, and prove us wrong, be very successful and enjoy the area. No problem.
