Hello,

I am relocating to North Carolina. Wanting to purchase land in South Asheville area. I know the airport is nearby, what is the plane traffic like now a days? Trains are listed as a possible source of noise through out Western North Carolina as well on the real estate contract. Any help is appreciated.
Thank You,
Terri

Traffic near the airport is horrible on I26 due to construction.
Are you wanting to build a house? Construction costs are astronomical and consistently people have so much difficulty with contractors they abandon projects that are not completed.
And unrestricted land will likely have it so you build your beautiful home and end up with....not so beautiful types of homes next to you.

Hello caracchel2 thanks for your response. Yes, we would be purchasing to build. What is the flight patterns of the airport and how is the noise from the planes?
Thanks in advance,

Terri

We live southwest of Asheville, near Hendersonville (Brevard side). Vehicle traffic on 26 is busy, particularly around rush hour, but not too bad at other times. They are working on the interstate, and when it’s completed, traffic should flow well, even during rush hour. We see planes landing and taking off out our back windows and love watching them. Usually they land from the south-southwest but depending on winds, can do the opposite. Have never heard about train noise; this is news to me. There are many beautiful residential areas near Hendersonville, particularly south, southwest, and west. You should be able to find a nice piece of property. Building costs are high here, but depending on where you’re moving from, may be less. There is no abandoned residential construction in our area; in fact, contractors have all the work they can handle and more. Have you considered purchasing an existing home? You will find it’s less expensive to buy here than build. We moved here a couple of years ago, and absolutely love living in the mountains. It is a wonderful place to live - one of the most beautiful places in America, IMO. You will love the trees, birds, mountain vistas, and natural beauty..

Flightaware.com is a good source for air traffic info. In addition to commercial air traffic AVL gets regular military air traffic. In fact I just received an alert that for the next 2 weeks there will be increased helicopter training traffic and later that day a Chinook (2 rotor) 'copter flew over my house. I live south of the airport about 15 miles and our air traffic overhead is close enough to see and be fun (husband is a private pilot) but not so close to be a noise disturbance. If you are looking at land close to the airport, you should anticipate having much more visual and noise impact. Air traffic for our little AVL is increasing yearly, new routes are being added regularly. You can do a little research and get that information.

Current look at air traffic in the region - Charlotte obv gets the most

Here's a look at the in and out this morning.

Very interesting photo. This photo makes it appear AVL is busier than it is at this particular point in time, with a large number of planes circling to land or departing. It does not give the altitude. If you look closely, a number of planes are slightly to the north and east of AVL in a line in fairly close proximity to one another. I suspect many of these are starting to que up to land in ATL. A number of the planes to the west of AVL appear to have taken off from ATL. One plane appears to have recently departed from AVL. With that said, AVL is busier than ever and does have a good amount of air traffic.

It's a moment in time snapshot on a Sunday morning. Altitude is available if you are on the website but there was no need for me to clutter the screen.

Yes, I understand it’s a snapshot, but it doesn’t mean all the planes in the photo are getting ready to land or take off from AVL. Flightradar24 is also a good site.

Of course not! If you'll look closely you can see AVL labeled.

Jets from the northeast on approach to ATL usually pass east-southeast of AVL at around 30,000 feet, so this traffic does not pose a noise issue for the areas near AVL.
