Yikes! I thought "mountainside-raping" only went on in the Pacific NW by the logging companies. It was heartbreaking to see that when I lived there. I never did get used to it.

Nope - WNC has its own brand - they are developers that don't do their homework and risk the neighboring creeks and towns with run off and hosts of other problems. Unfortunately local county boards are seeing dollar signs in tax revenues - here's hoping for intelligent decision-makers will be elected.
I hope there are some brains being elected too. Clear cutting in the PNW has led to erosion, flooding and a whole host of other problems. When will these people learn you can't mess with mother nature? And this business of planting a tree for each one logged is bull... First of all, there's just no substituting for old growth wood. And now that the demand is so high, they are logging young trees--there's no time to wait 100 years for them to mature. It's sickening. It's the ONE thing I don't miss about living there.
The stuff going on here in NC, while bad, pales in comparison to what I've seen in the NW.
I climbed Mt. Shuksan in Washington's North Cascades this past August and the approach trial passed from a semi-mature forest into a clearcut and then into a virgin forest. The difference in climate characteristics in each of the 3 "forests" was unbelievable. The semi mature forest was humid but the temp was comfortable, I was sweating profusely through the clearcut and then became immediately chilled upon stepping into the beautiful virgin forest. After this observation, we were much more aware of all the clearcutting we saw on the mountainsides during our drive out a few days later.
Hope you took pictures of the virgin forest. It won't be there for long.
