I have excluded the biltmore since we have already been there. What is the best place in Asheville to drive to, park the car and walk around taking in the sights and sounds ? thanks...
Dear Hey Dade,
I agree with visiting downtown. Park in the Wall Street parking deck, come out the north entrance, go into the Grove Arcade across the street. After looking around in there, come out where you came in and go east on Battery Park Avenue to Haywood Street. At the end, you'll notice on your right a big iron statue and that's how you get back to the parking deck via Wall Street, but skip that for now. Instead, visit Haywood Street going north towards the Catholic Church and back again. There's an entrance to the Atrium along the left, and along the right is the Malaprop Bookstore. Come back to your car via Wall Street, a pedestrian-only area. There are many other streets to wander, but those would be the easiest to get to, have the most interesting feel, and give you the best variety in a small area that downtown Asheville has to offer. You can also do a search of this forum for other threads that discuss this sort of thing.
