Stevens Point is a very small place. So, it will be difficult for you to find apartments which do not house college students. May be you can try looking at independent houses.
You mention that you plan to rent till you sell your current house. How much time will that take? From my experience, it will be difficult for you to find an apartment with a lease of less than a year.

Also, some apartments in Stevens Point have restrictions on the number of residents in a house. A friend of mine had great difficulty in finding an apartment for his family comprising of him, his wife and 2 kids, as the apartments that appealed to him could legally only house 2 adults+ 1 kid (2BR apartments).
If you provide me more information about your needs, I will be able to suggest apartment complexes for you.
It should be noted that occupancy restrictions apply to non-family groups. Denying housing to immediate families where the children are under 18 using occupancy restrictions is blatantly illegal.

After calling a few apartments, I have learned that our family is too big (4) for an apartment. So now we're looking at renting a house or duplex. Any good websites for house to rent? There doesn't seem to be that many houses for rent. Thanks for your help! Really appreciate it. If you do know of an apartment that will allow my family of 4 and dog please let me know. We're planning on signing a year lease.
Thanks!!!

How small of an apartment were you looking for? Maximum occupancy by city ordinance is 125 square feet per person. That along with HUD's Fair Housing guidelines pursuant to the Fair Housing Act's prohibition against discrimination based on familial status would imply that anything above 500sqft with at least 2 bedrooms should be available to your family. This is provided for informational purposes only and should not be construed as legal advice. If you are having difficulty securing affordable housing for your family, you may wish to consult a tenant lawyer as needed.

As I mentioned before, apartment complexes here are hesitant in providing 2 BR apartments to 4 member families.

And their hesitancy may be a violation of federal law. Fair housing regulations allow some leeway for localities to enact occupancy restrictions but I don't see anything in either the SP or Porter County ordinances that permit occupancy restrictions based on the number of persons per bedroom. Maybe I'm missing something.

Everyone's approach is different but as for me if it came down to being forced into a rental situation that does not fit my needs or budget, a phone call from a tenant lawyer might persuade some of these places to be a little less hesitant.
