Hello everyone,

We would like to move to Sheboygan, Wisconsin the next year. We have a son, and we are trying to raise him in a peaceful, quiet, and safe place. We have read about Wisconsin and it seems to be a nice place to live. Our concern is our nationality and where we come from. We are from Cuba. We need to raise our son in an educated enviroment. Could you please give us an advice?
Thank you in advance.

Sheboygan is a great place, but if you're from a big city with a warm climate (Miami?) it may be an easier to transition to a place somewhat bigger than Sheboygan. For example, Milwaukee is very safe and peaceful compared to Miami. If you're looking for a smaller city, Sheboygan is certainly very good, assuming you can secure a job. Madison is another consideration.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your response. How fast can we find a job in Sheyboygan, Milwaukee, or Madison? My wife works as Community Liaison Specialist in Miami-Dade County Public Schools and I am a truck driver. But we don't know how fast we can find a job. I really appreciate your advice. In addition, what another place we may find a job? Could you please give us another suggestion where to live and work in Wisconsin? Our main goal is to give a good education to our son.

I am originally from Miami, FL and have lived in Wisconsin for the last 24 years. We spent the first seven years in a small city and the last 17 in Madison. I believe you'd probably be happier moving to a more populated city like Madison then Sheboygan. Madison is still way better then where you're living as far as I'm concerned! Another option might be the Appleton area if you want to go a bit smaller. Madison is more liberal then Appleton. You will have to adjust to our long, cold winters with lots of snow though! There is good education & lots of opportunity, lots to see & do here. As far as a job goes, I wouldn't suggest you move without having a job lined up, not just here but anywhere! I would also suggest that you take a trip to Wisconsin to see if it's a place you feel comfortable, before making such a big move. I can tell you that I would never move back to Miami. You most likely will appreciate our change of seasons, we have four of them unlike Miami which has two, hot & humid.

Yes, dlk33 said it as well or better than I could have. Your job prospects will be better in either Madison or Milwaukee. Madison schools are probably better than Milwaukee. Get at least your wife's job lined up before moving. I imagine as a truck driver you'll have more flexibility in where you can live. Madison will feel very small for the first few months but you do adjust. Great place for kids. Good luck.

Thank you so much again to all of you. That sounds great!!! You are the best!!!!
Certainly, your advices make me feel more confident to make a decision. I really appreciate all of you. The problem will be to find a job because we don't know exactly if it would be easy to be hired. We don't have a job lined up yet, and we think that it will be the main issue for us. May be possible any suggestion about what could be the main sources of employment?

We have read a lot about Wisconsin, and we are wondering if there is a place in Madison that wouldn't be too expensive.Thank you again. I am really excited with this forum.

Good job!

Good job!
As you know the job market isn't good really anywhere right now. I'd say that Wisconsin is doing better then lots of other places, but there are still lots of people in all kinds of fields looking for employment. You need to be able to offer something better then the next person looking for the same job. Do you maybe have several months of savngs put aside which will allow you to pay your living expenses while you seek employment? If not, you really do need to find employment before making such a big move. Your best bet is to look for work in what you're experienced doing. Only you know how much money you need to make to survive, different jobs offer different pay. You could check out the newspaper want ads in whatever city you're interested in moving to, to see what might be available. You can also see about the costs to rent an apt. at the same time. The thing is, you'd want to rent close to where you'll be working, so you'll probably have to wait until you have a job lined up.
One nice thing is in Madison it's pretty easy to find an apt. near a busline if you don't want to drive. There are only a few questionable areas that you'd want to stay away from in Madison. Do whatever research you can online, there is information out there for you. Good luck!

That sounds really bad!! Six months is a really long time, but in those times I think is normal. Eventually, you will find it. Good luck for you!!!!!

Finding a job is really the main concern we have. It will be beneficial to wait and save money because we want to move away from Miami, and if we don't make a decision we won't do it. Our expectations about moving to Wiscosin is our main goal now, keeping in mind the problems we will have to face.

One more questions, Would you please recommend us among Sheyboygan, Appleton, Wausau, La Crosse, Eau Claire?? What about the employment, rent, schools, and so forth.

Thank you so much again to all of you.!!! I want to apologize if we ask many questions. All the information we found here is really helpful for us, keeping in mind that we only have been here, in United States, for only three years and our experience here in Miami has not been what we really want, at least it is not the place that we want to live and raise our son.
We really appreciate a lot your comments!!!!!!!

If you're looking to get back into trucking/long hauling, Schneider National (Big Orange) is headquartered less than 1/2 hour away from Appleton. They just started to hire again and they will hire anyone with experience & treat their employees, regardless of race, very well. I would think Appleton & Eau Claire would be the most receptive to Cubans. Schools are going to be similar except for Wausau, probably not a good choice. Sheboygan (50 miles to Milwaukee) and Eau Claire (50 miles to Minneapolis) are going to closest to major metro areas and give your wife the best chance to find a good.
