Are the people friendly? Is it a hard town to assimilate yourself into. Any info is appreciated.

Its a quiet town with main company's paper and cranberry's on the river, older homes seams neat and clean as my past visits and folks are friendly with the small town atmosphere. Let me say its a pictures area .

People are friendly, yes... in that "strike up pleasant, trivial conversations with strangers while standing in line at the grocery checkout" kind of way. But as far as building lasting relationships, the non-transient parts of Wisconsin are notorious for the difficulty of breaking into already-established social circles. Unless someone with first-hand experience can tell us otherwise, I don't think there's reason to believe Wisconsin Rapids is any different in this regard.

'Rapids is about as non-transient as you can get for a city its size - nearly everyone's from there, grew up/is related, etc.

I disagree that Wisconsin in general is much different from anywhere else (at least in the Midwest) in terms of setting up in a new town. I've personally done it a bunch of times. Some are easier than others, and 'Rapids strikes me as a tough one...Stevens Point, a college town up the road, is a bit different in that regard, and a nicer town in pretty much every way.

I grew up in Rapids leaving right after high school, we get back there 4-6 times annually. My opinion is that Drover's assessment is pretty much spot on. People are pleasant, but it's had to break into existing social circles.
