I keep hearing that the rate of unemployment isn't as bad here (Kansas) as most places. In SE Kansas, it doesn't look that way. A large manufacturer closed in Pittsburg with like 800 employees a couple years ago and an insurance claims company just closed in Fort Scott that had between 200 and up to 400 at one time. A few smaller businesses have closed also and, of course, the fallout for other businesses increases with the unemployment. My husband was unemployed for 6 months and was extremely lucky to get another job as he had been looking all over the state and the US and there was nothing not even on Fort Riley which used to have openings almost constantly. I watch the foreclosure lists also and it would indicate a less than merry picture also. I have friends in a couple of the other states that are supposed to be doing well and they claim that they don't see it either and one said that the wages are so low there that having a job was not enough since you needed at least two to survive. Many have lost good jobs and are working but now part-time and/or minimum wage jobs. I would really hesitate to go off adventuring based on what the government is saying or predicting yet I see a lot of people asking about relocating to Kansas for a job in cities where the foreclosure rate is very high. I have also noticed a trend with the companies trying to get the best employees just churning them in one door and out the other while they picked through what was out there. We thank God every day to own our home and have an income but know that tomorrow, it all could change. Just really be careful about the government statistics especially in an election year.

Sometimes I don't trust gov figures, as the gov could lie just to make the regime look good.

Read this simple explanation of how the government cooks unemployment numbers and releases the misinterpreted data to the media who then faithfully report it to The People.

Just because a whole bunch of people got layed off, doesn't mean the statistics are wrong (people get layed off when unemployment numbers are low too.)

I think it's not that easy to release data without pre-verification or if they are validated by the right authorities. The media also, I believe, are practicing vigilance in dealings with things like this.

Perhaps NO isn't the right answer
Unemployment is 4.5% where I live.
If Congress would do something instead of NO there would be jobs

Wait, are you saying the media "verifies" the U-3 numbers, but not the U-5 or U-6 numbers? That makes no sense; they're just reporting what their managers tell them to report. What vigilance? The number are all in the same report.
For whatever reason, the mainstream media chooses to report the least realistic/accurate of the BLS unemployment numbers. It's baffling to me.
