Hello all,

Need some advice on current situation.

About Me:
-31 years old (bachelor)
-M.S./B.S
-Currently have a job that i enjoy
-High possibility that I will be laid off in May 2013

Contemplating another year of work with possible layoff vs. going back to school full-time
to purse doctoral studies (full tuition and small stipend will be provided).

My question.....Should I feel crazy for even considering pursuing a doctoral degree fulltime at the age of 31?

Any input would be much appreciated

Depends on the type of doctoral degree. Some doctoral degrees are worthless and won't help with anything. If it is not a hard science or medical doctor degree, then no it won't be worth it. Some advanced degrees are kisses of death when job hunting.

You are a teacher and if you wish to move up, I would work on my master's part time if I were you.

Why dont you just get another stable job in the year between now and when you might get laid off?

What kind of teacher gets full tuition paid for a doctoral degree? I haven't heard of any employers who will pay that (esp if the guy is getting let go in 2013). It doesn't make sense.

I doubt the employer would pay tuition for an employee whose job is in danger of being phased out. Also, many companies will try to force you to repay the tuition if you leave employment within a certain timeframe after the company pays for the degree.

Follow your passion and dreams; if you have to quit your job than do it and don't look back. Always have a plan and it looks like you have a good one. Wish you the best.

How many more times are you going to ask the same question (using different headers) and expect different answers as you've done for the past few months? If you can get the PhD for free then take it.

They used to cover housing also at one time if the University has on-campus graduate housing available.

Unless you are planning on being a professor, or something like a medical doctor a doctorate will not likely help you that much. In most fields, the biggest jump is between bachelors and masters. Really, the only reason to get a doctorate is to participate in something requiring a doctorate, not to further an existing career.
