Somebody left me a rep comment (thanks, whoever you are) suggesting getting my CDL and OTR trucking.
Actually - I did that in the 1980s and loved it! And, it's something I've considered again...but I live alone, have animals and would have to totally change my lifestyle for one on the road, even if I did short haul.
You know that is a very good suggestion for someone who's able to do it, though. Male or female (I'm female) it was a great job and a great experience. I'd do it again if it wasn't for having to give up my pets (which are very important to me.)
ETA - Hopes, I hear you, the economy is awful here. BUT I am able to own two homes, the upside is that it's cheap to live here - and the house I live in will be paid off in two years. Were I to move somewhere better, I'd have a hard time buying another home. And my business has kept me better afloat than many I know but it took time to build. I've moved a lot in my life, from state to state and even county to country...I am really tired of starting over and over again.
But that's one other reason the idea of getting into HHA/nurses aide type work (I volunteer in this capacity, in hospice) is that although the pay is truly crappy, this line of work is projected to grow very fast in the next decade. So with certification and experience, I'll be in a better position to land a job elsewhere.
It sounds like you have a unique background. Since you are doing well with managing debt and finances then you should look into what having disability, health insurance would cost you and socking away for retirement. You might decide that a traditional job is worth the inflexibility or you might decide you can pay those things on your own.
I've been self-employed for over five years now. I've tried to find traditional work for months and months and months. But, since the offers weren't exactly flowing in I've been redoubling my self efforts and will see where that gets me. I'm also looking into other trades that will allow me to stay self-employed but will pay higher so I can start taking care of all the "benefit" things properly myself. Maybe you could look into a higher paying trade than HHC that would allow you to stay self-employed, but earn more.
