I have a phone interview this week for a full time position. Prior to that, however, I made a verbal agreement (no contract signed yet) to do a 2-day coverage job for a temp agency in June.
Now, if, after the interview I am offered a job, I of course, want to accept, but how do I handle the 2 day commitment I verbally agreed to? I had no way of knowing I would get an interview, the 2 day job came up two weeks ago, the phone interview opportunity came just last Friday. I didn't mention the 2 day commitment at the time of the call to set up the phone interview.
My question is, do I mention the 2 day coverage during the phone interview if it seems like I will be considered for the job? Or do I wait until I have a firm job offer?
Or do I tell the 2 day temp that I cannot do it because I've been offered a full time position?
I don't want to hurt my chances of getting the full time work for 2 days on a temp job!
Should I find out if they would be willing to let me fulfill the 2 days and miss the 2 days from the full time job? Although this may be kind of sensitive since I would just be starting a new job!
Any helpful tips would be appreciated!!
Your 2-day coverage job has nothing to do with your opportunity for full time employment. You don't have to mention it in the interview or at any other time. If you manage to land the position, then your only responsibility to to contact the temp agency as soon as you can and let them know that you cannot report for the 2-day. It is a potential lose-lose if you mention it during the interview or prior to accepting a full time position.
Absolutely do NOT mention the other commitment in the phone interview. You don't want to sound like an applicant who has lots of 'issues' that have to be dealt with. And you don't want to sound presumptuous--you don't have the job yet, so there may be no conflict at all. And even if you do get the job, there will likely be additional interviews and delays before your start date. This commitment may come and go before you start another job.
If they do offer you a job, call the temp agency and say you are unable to accept the assignment. Believe me, they have PLENTY of applicants on their rolls who can do it, and plenty of time to find that person.
I wouldn't try to take 2 days off of your new job, if you get it, to fulfill a temp job. Either employer could have issues with you being on someone else's payroll at the time.
Thank you! I'll be sure to post with the outcome!!
