i received an offer over the phone
hr guy tried to make me accept on the spot
base salary is about $3k less than what i am currently making
not willing to go backwards.
so i ask if there is any flexibility
he says he will look and see and call me the next day.
my reasons for asking for more:
- currently make more
- cost of living is higher if i move to the city of employment
- i have direct experience they are looking for.

do you think they will budge? a friend of mine works there and told me the hiring manager really liked me - am i worth a couple more $1ks?

did i do the right thing? i feel like an idiot selling myself short...

now im starting to question if i am currently over paid

but i did research and i should be at a higher level, considering the area.

thx

I think you're fine. If he calls with a better offer, you win, if he doesn't you aren't any better than you were today.

Why would you take 3k less then what you are already making unless you really hate your current job?

I agree--you'd be selling yourself short to take a pay cut. If they refuse to go up a few thousand, you might think about what that tells you about them as a company. They will probably be very stingy with raises/bonuses in the future, at the very least.

Yep.

If the HR rep calls back and meets your number, make sure you get it in writing before you resign your current job.

I sure will.

I do hate my current job...but I don't want them to know that.
I just can't take a pay cut though.

Do you think they will come back with a better offer?

Ahhhh...I hate waiting like this! Maybe they will call me tomorrow.

and speculating only makes the waiting worse. Put it out of your mind. Go for a run, or organize your spice cabinet or something.

Nothing at all wrong with what you did.

I wouldn't be against taking a job that pays a little less if its' in a city you want to be in, more room for advancement, job has is better than your current one in terms of work life balance or even your interets.

As for asking for more money though, totally legit, who wants to work for less than your making, plus if you have to move to another city that warrants you asking for more.

They say avg raise is 3% which isn't really true but that's what they say where as they say when you switch jobs it's generally for a 9% - 12% raise.

I think you'll probably get a few k extra but worse case sceneario the guy says no and offers you the origional offer.
