Solar company cuts US jobs, expands in Mexico - BusinessWeek

Struggling solar panel maker Energy Conversion Devices Inc. will eliminate 140 U.S. jobs as it shifts some production from Michigan to Mexico to save money.

Not in the least surprised, and so it goes on.....

China locked up all the "green" jobs like three years ago, so even if they are a true employment producer (which I seriously doubt they are) they would all be overseas anyways.

You know what Mexico doesn't have? Union jobs that cost in excess of $50 an hour with benefits. I wouldn't have moved the company out of America, but to a very union unfriendly state, for this Oklahoma strikes me as a good choice due to it's proximity to the deserts.

lol, I wish I had a union job, I probably would have still been employed. South there are not so many unions in Michigan that everyone is in one. I'm sure this place probably wasn't even unionized. I have never had a union job and I have been here my whole life.

And while I agree $50/hour with benefits is excessive (and what I mean about "overunionization" in another post about the 50s and 60s job world), so in reverse is $8.25/hour with none (for this kind of job).

It;s a wonder we have an illegal immgration problem w/so many of our jobs moving to Mexico. Hershey moved 500 of it's jobs to Mexico. So did Wolverine boots. Look on your toothpaste boxes next time to see where it's made. Pepsodent is the only toothpaste I've found that is made in the USA.

Who cares??? If a company can't make money here, then let them go. If people would make more of an effort to buy American, it might encourage companies to do more business here again... But individuals on their own will vote with their wallets no matter what.

No matter what, the U.S. still has the largest economy, and that doesn't appear to be changing. Companies must pay a premium to operate here, and that doesn't appear to be changing either.
