It's been roughly 20 days (not including weekends) since I submitted an application for a position at a local hospital. I followed up once every week since that's how one lands a job there. A few days ago, 30 minutes after I called in to follow up, I got an email saying that the position has been put on hold indefinitely. The email goes on to say that if I wish to be considered for other positions that I should log back on to the careers site. Am I out of luck or is there something else to this?

It means to move on. It happened to me too. I was suppose to meet the vice president of sales and then the company decided to put a hold on the position. A lot of scenarios: They promoted someone from within, they found someone through an employee, or they decided not to hire someone.

So I'm out of luck? I don't understand why they would put the position on hold instead of rejecting me right on the spot.

Because this is the way employer's do things in this country. I have had job offers that I've accepted and 1 day before I was to start, the position was recalled and the offer rescinded. Its amazing that prospective employers can offer jobs they don't intend to fill and trick people into thinking they've got a new job to start. I am now self-employed. I won't subject myself to the games these company's are playing.

Someone changed their mind(for some reason) and there's no need for an explanation.

Maybe, they found someone better but have not reached out to him/her yet. So if that person rejects the offer then you are plan B. Many scenarios!

I would move on.

It means at one point they had budgeted for the position but now the budgeted money has been moved elsewhere.

I disagree except for the move on part. The position was "frozen", regardless there is no job for the OP.

Apply for other positions there as they advised and elsewhere.

Like i said many scenarios to explain the "position on hold" statement.

If its budget issues, I would not apply for other positions there. Most often, corps who do this last minute change of mind are mis-managed overall.
