I was really surprised, especially in this economy, to get hired 3 working days after my last day of work. I quit my job because I was working for an absolutely hideous administration. I simply couldn't take it anymore and was willing to move anywhere rather than put up with the garbage I endured for more than a year.
I never counted on finding something closer to home, with better pay, better administration, and less work.
Has anyone else had a good turnaround like this?

Myself.

A former executive of mine at a new company had an opening-- I sent an email asking for more details. We had a conversation and I said I would be interesting in applying. He said that if I wanted the job, the job was mine. I was offered the top of the salary grade and offered maximum flexibility of choosing when I start in the next 6 weeks.

Good for you!
I just assumed I'd take have to take a pay cut and have to move to a relatively undesirable place. I feel very fortunate to be able to make a move up in more ways than one.
Good luck with your new job!

I did as well. I was laid off in December of last year (December 9 to be exact). I started a new position at a new company 32 days later.

I do a lot of consulting / contracting work. Usually I know in advance when a contract is going to end so I start looking while still employed. Best case is that is that my last day is on a Friday and my first day with the next gig is on the following monday. However, it doesn't work out like that often. Normally I have a 2-6 weeks of down time.
