I was never asked this question or similar like "Why I should hire you over the other seeking a job at our firm?" but still it sounds really lame to me as I am not up to answering these questions or make a decision for the hiring staff.
I don't know the exact result if I tell during the interview "I am not paid to answer these kind of questions or make any of HR's decisions" but I would definitely try to convince them do their job.

Seriously, I am not paid to answer these kind of questions or make any of HR's decisions during the interview.
The answer is simple yet many find it difficult to word. One being interviewed would want to convey concrete reasons how their skills and experience fit the job and contribute to the success of the organization, And display confidence but not cockiness. It's sales. Selling one's self and skills. knowledge, experience and psychology go a long way. Even body language is looked at by many experienced interviewers, Along with how you conduct yourself in the waiting room in some cases. Strive for being as mint as a shiny new corvette.
It's a standard bad interview question. It's idiotic and a sign of a bad interviewer and probably a bad job but not a tough one. "I'm a hard worker". "I'm dependable". "I'm a quick learner".
If you don't like the question, you can pass. Don't expect to get the job, though.

No. The question is to see if you even know who you are.

What does that have to do with anything? We're talking about a job interview. Not psycho-analysis. If somebody had a bad childhood, that's a shame but the interview should be about skills and experience.
Bacailly it sounds like the OP isn't able to expalin why he/she should be hitred over other cnadidates. its a commo question now days. Does mean it decide who gets hired all by itself.

Who the hell knows if I am superior over the rest applying for the same position? What? I know their skills? or had a chance to look at their profiles/resumes?
The one should think he is better than the rest based on his own assumptions, wait! here comes another applicant.
I can see most people answering this question in a similar manner, using similar adjectives about themselves. Try to be a little unique, respond in a way that you don't think most people would. This response could help you stand out and memorable or you'll just blend into the pool of candidates that answered the same way.
