I was wondering if someone could offer some advice. I have two possible options.

Option 1:

Take a part-time job in a field that I know well and I like. The PT job is 2 days per week with full benefits, at about 50K per year. I would also have the opportunity to work overtime for a great per hour rate, and I would have time to build my own business (something I always wanted to do) and take care of my infant son.

Option 2:

Take a full-time job in a field new to me. This job is in the corporate world, non-exempt, and I would be looking at probably 60+ hours in a work week. My wife would have to quit her job. This job could open a lot of new doors for me and pays around 130K per year.

The benefits are comparable. In fact, the benefits of the PT position are actually slightly better.

People I know think I'm crazy for even debating this, but I just figured that I would see what random people on the internet think about it.

Thanks

Truthfully, the choice is not as obvious, IMHO.

1) The part time job is still pretty nice at 50K a year, and you get more free time.

2) The full time job could have more potential and pays a lot more, but the loss of your wife's salary would cancel at least part of that gain out (I don't know how much she's paid a year.)

Oddly enough, I'd probably take the part time job... making $50,000 a year for only 2 days of work a week with benefits AND having time to take care of the kid and work on your own business sounds pretty nice... Money isn't everything once one can pay all the bills and save some up for later, IMHO.

Both are tempting for sure. At a glance, I would go with option 2 (more money), but if you want to start your own business, you might be better off with option 1, the PT work. Good luck in your decision.
