Another question becomes, what happens when you don't get the internship?

Eager college grad or current college student applying for internships, he does not care, paid or not paid he just wants expereince. So what does he do when all the unpaid internships tell him no?

People won't hire you for entry level unless you have expereince, so you go to the internships. But if the internships don't bring you on then what?

While I was in college I volunteered regularly and did so with gigs that were relevent to my field. I think that should be par for the course for any college student, tho.

It's all a gamble nowadays. You can have gone to a good school, got good grades and have plenty of internship experience and still not be able to get any job because you fall into that dreaded overqualified for manual labor jobs but under-qualified for professional jobs niche. Many people with families to support and decades of professional work experience are out of work. There are stories of Harvard grads who are unemployed. There are stories of former CEO's who are working for $7.50 an hour or are unemployed. When all these spectacularly truly overqualified people have a hard time finding work, do you really think little Johnny who "did the right thing" by going to college and working for free is going to have any guarantee of a job? When will cynical people just admit that the long-held conventional wisdom that "college = success" is no longer true for almost anybody these days but people who come from elite, wealthy well-connected families.

You don't need to be rich. It's just more important now to graduate from a quality school.

This is true, though I guarntee the "little johnny did the right thing and expects a job" will quickly change if it has not already.
