Without knowing someone on the inside or being in the right place at the right time, it is hard to get a job on a fishing boat. Furthermore, if you are just starting out you will not make the big bucks you see on the tv shows. You have a better chance getting on with a processing ship. However there are a lot of pitfalls working on a processer. You will be working 16 hours a day. A couple years back one processer was requiring 16.5 hours a day. You make minimum wage. There is a lot of OT. If the season is bad, the processor could go bankrupt and you may see little or none of your wages. Usually you are reqiued to agree to work for a certain lenght of time. If you quit early you will be dropped off at the first port they come to and it will be up to you pay for the plane ticket home. Life onboard in general is awful. There is crime onboard just like anywhere else. Even so there are people that return year after year.

Do you watch "Deadliest Catch" on Discovery? Next time i order crab legs I will think of what had to be done to bring it in. It looks like the money is good, but working conditions are horrible, no sleep, cold and windy, high risk of death or injury.
