I want to transfer to another location within the company that is closer to my residence. ive been calling around and found a location that may have an opening. how should i tell my current boss
If I had a good relationship with my boss, I'd be straightforward and let him know that my commute was a hardship, and that I needed a transfer.
HOWEVER, there is no "right" way to handle this because it depends on several things. You should consider the following in deciding what to do:
1. Your relationship with your boss - Are you on good terms or not? Is he likely to try to spoil things for you or not?
2. Your boss's personality - Is he generally understanding and supportive? Or, is he selfish about letting employees go? Some bosses are more interested in keeping their units running smoothly, than in what is best for their employees.
3. Company policy regarding transfers - How have other lateral moves been handled? Is there a protocol for staff transferring departments/locations? Some companies don't approve of "stealing" staff from other departments; is this the case?
4. Whether you will be working with your old boss in your new position - If he resents your leaving, he may give you a hard time if you have to work with him later. If you won't have to work with him again, then it's no big deal.
Keep in mind that some managers notify one another when situations like this come up, in order to keep the peace. So the manager in the new location may tell your current manager that you requested a transfer.
You have to weigh the pros and cons, and look into company policy.
