I got a card that says "you deserve the respect, admiration..." with everybody's signature along with some nice cookie and a balloon.

So how much does this really mean? I guess at very least, they don't hate me. :-)

Some may call me cynical, but my guess is most people participate in Boss' Day just so the boss doesn't get peeved at them, not because they really have good feelings towards their boss.

I have never acknowledged the so-called "Bosses Day", and you are under no obligation to do so, either.

They may very well hate you, but feel obligated to do this.

Haha, maybe some of them.

I don't even remember. Some of the ladies on the team organized it.

I think Bosses Day is a spin-off from Secretary's Day (Admin Professionals, now), but I have no clue for what reason.

It can't be to say "Thank You" because IMO, we thank them every day we come in to work and they thank us with a pay check.

I sign any and all cards that coworkers ask me to sign. At this point, I don't even bother to read them. I work for a large company and there is at least one birthday/birth day/promotion/congratulations, etc every other day. My office cards mean nothing.

Hmmm...

It depends on what type of manager you are. If you feel you are a fair manager, who treats their staff with respect, they're just showing their appreciation.

...or are you the type of manager who doesn't give a rat's ***** about their staff and runs your department on fear and intimidation and they're just trying to brownnose you?

...or are you the type of person who loves to celebrate every holiday on the calendar and they know your feelings would have been hurt if you didn't get anything for boss's day?

...or was the cookie so big that you had to share it with everyone in the department?

I think I am this kind of manager but every terrible manager I have the pleasure to meet thinks he or she is fair and respectful. :-)
