I do not smoke. But I work with two people who do...and it is driving me crazy. They are always missing when work needs to be done...out for a smoke break...like, being a smoker entitles a person to work less? And they come back, reeking of cigarette smoke. It is nauseating to me.

I actually agree with laws not hiring smokers...

I don't smoke. But I'm absolutely positive that there are things that I do that have annoyed co-workers in past, and I'll bet there are some things that you do that annoy your co-workers, too.

But I AM all about protecting the rights of my fellow citizens to engage in such things, because the very moment that I advocate refusing those rights to others, I've said that it's fine and dandy for someone else to take a dislike to my having rights that I value and trying to get them taken away from me.

Employers (non-governmental) can refuse to hire smokers and that's fine. The moment the government starts doing it (and, yes, I know some are), we've got a problem.

But it's enough for you to think about if you're comfortable with someone else making those kinds of decisions for YOU because someone else doesn't like what you do when you advocate making such decisions for others.

While I agree with you as an ex-smoker I really don't think we need another "bash the smoker" thread; do we? The problem is the greedy corporations that make cigarettes not the hopeless addicts they've helped create.

Yah, see, threads like this just make me want to smoke and smoke and smoke and smoke just to irritate those who act like they've never done a thing to irritate anyone else.

I'm a smoker but there is no reason that workers can't wait until either of their two 15 min breaks or lunch comes. As far as the smell, I'm sorry but some people's bo,perfume and coffee mouth bother me as well. We all have imperfections.

People who smoke, myself included can be super productive unless they are a three pack a day person and are out several times an hour. I have known more non smokers personally who were about as useful on the job as a turnip, just saying. Not every hard working man or woman is straight edge and a perfect being. People will be who they are and it is not and should be a concern they have certain vices esp this one which is legal to begin with.

As long as my employer doesn't object to me going for a short 15-20 minute walk during the day, I won't begrudge my smoking coworkers who go out once or twice an hr and stay out there for 10 minutes smoking, talking to other people, etc. Yet somehow it doesn't seem to work that way....

But having said that, I have to agree with TexasHorseLady...the minute I say you can't have that right, I am saying it's okay to take some of my rights away as well.

Huh? Are those corporations are putting a gun to someone's head to make them smoke?

I'm not a smoker, have smoked in the past a little, but never took long breaks. Don't need to bash the smoker because it's their right to smoke and smell like that. I prefer not to. My present boss asked me if I smoked before hiring me because he didn't want people taking long breaks for smoking. :-) It didn't bother me to say no, although he does have a couple of smokers in the office. LOL.

To each his own and to each his own health. I guess I've seen too many people die of COPD and it scares me to want to smoke!

Making it another law isn't going to help anything. We have enough laws as there is. We need to have people with sense and sensibilities. Wishing you the best in looking for a new job! LOL JMHO
