We dont get off Christmas eve or the day after thanksgiving. I do have 16 vacation days to burn before the end of the year (as only 65 hours roll over), so I will be taking a substantial amount of time off before the end of the year.

A few replies, so I'll explain why I asked. Our family is having another Christmas Eve event. Last year it was held Sunday since Christmas Day was on Monday. This year, Christmas Eve falls on Monday. With the event starting at 1pm, I asked "won't some people be working?"
I was told no, no one in the family will be working though several of them are under age 45-50.
------------------
There are certain types of jobs where I know people have to work. Maybe retail sellers like Target and Walmart for late gift buying, fast food restaurants, etc.
Many close at 6pm on Christmas Eve.
-----------------
One relative works at a hospital. Some are spouses and do not work. One is self employed so they can be off. Not sure about all the others. I assumed the event would be the Sunday or Saturday before Christmas, since Christmas Eve fell on a weekday.

I work in health care and I have off Christmas but not Christmas Eve. I know the place will be dead though.

My husband, who has more holidays off than I do, has off Christmas Eve.

We're closed for the week between Christmas and New Years (and since we're all salaried, we all still get paid).

I worked for a major telecom company about a year ago and from Dec. 15th through Jan. 2nd, it was mostly dead. I could take off the last two weeks of the year without any issue. I believe we had both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off, too.

Now I work for an IT sales organization and the last two weeks of the year are supposedly our busiest, as everyone tries to close out strong and hit their targets. Needless to say, it's rather difficult to get time off during that time.

I'm haven't worked on Christmas Eve in about 12 years, but there were times when I did: newspaper reporter, PR director at a regional food bank.

At my current workplace, all employees vote on which 12 days we want as holidays; Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and the day after Thanksgiving are shoo-ins.

Perhaps the host has already checked to make sure people are off? Obviously, there are a lot of people who work Christmas Eve.
