It doesn't end up working like that. I had a job I hated for 5 years, and I couldn't leave because they made everyone sign a contract. Not only did I have to fulfill the contact term, but if I didn't notify them that I was not renewing, like, 6 months ahead of time, I could also not quit. Hard to find a job 6 months ahead of the time when you can start. I was literally stuck there until I had a baby and went on medical leave, which gave me time to find another job. They don't sue or anything, but you can lose your professional license and not be eligible for jobs with the state or federal government (it was a govt employer).

Well of course you are free to enter into an employment contract; that is a different story. But in that case, it is a contract you voluntarily sign if you wish to take the job. No employer is required to make an employment contract with an employee.

But that is a contract. You said so yourself that you had to sign one.
