This is why I think unions are good.

If he was in a union, the union would help find out WHY he was fired.

It doesn't end up working like that. I had a job I hated for 5 years, and I couldn't leave because they made everyone sign a contract. Not only did I have to fulfill the contact term, but if I didn't notify them that I was not renewing, like, 6 months ahead of time, I could also not quit. Hard to find a job 6 months ahead of the time when you can start. I was literally stuck there until I had a baby and went on medical leave, which gave me time to find another job. They don't sue or anything, but you can lose your professional license and not be eligible for jobs with the state or federal government (it was a govt employer).

That hardly seems fair (unless "this or that" are protected classes, which is covered under "at will" anyway).

Well of course you are free to enter into an employment contract; that is a different story. But in that case, it is a contract you voluntarily sign if you wish to take the job. No employer is required to make an employment contract with an employee.

I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't be legal.

But that is a contract. You said so yourself that you had to sign one.

But that's a contract you agreed to.
