Yes I would have done it when I was younger and fresh out of college. Not so much now that I'm in my 30's, engaged, and hopefully starting a family in the near future. Now the only traveling I want to do is for vacation and to see family who live far away.
One friend does it now. In the past him and his wife were raising their kids and he stayed put. As his kids got older he took on more of these assignments and now travels maybe 40 to 45 weeks a year. He loves it. His wife has flown out to spend weeks with him and she loves it. He works all over the USA.
If you're young and single, sure, why not. As someone else said, as long as they pay travel costs, you're golden. Most of your earning could go into savings for a rainy day.
I took that kind of job once, right out of college. I made as much as you're talking about (plus they paid all travel expenses). I hated it. I did it 3 years and got away as soon as I possibly could. Everyone says "oh it would be great to see the country for free" but they forget you're working when you're there. I'd bounce from jobsite to jobsite, and work 12 hours a day when I was there. I never met new people, or saw things, nor did I even want to. And I was single, young, no kids, no house, ect, so I wasn't tied down to home or anything.
For me, it would depend entirely upon the mode of travel.
I loathe flying. The rational part of me recognizes that its safe ... so long as nothing goes wrong. But as with incarceration and surgery, the individual is powerless if it does. The security measures post 9/11/01 add to the headaches, and the schedule is usually built around an early-morning start, so that the rest of your day can be straight-jacketed.
A year without an airplane ride is better than a month without wearing a necktie; but if it's in my own vehicle, where do i sign up?
No. Been there, done that. It messes with your life too much. If you are single, no one wants to date you, because you are gone all the time. If you are married, you get in trouble for never being home.
I would be gone working all week, get home Friday night, dead tired, and have to "chipper up" to go out, meanwhile, I had piles of laundry to do, grocery shopping, and fit it all in two days, so Monday I would be ready for travel.
I've heard people say that they would not take such a job either because they have family obligations or they would just get "tired of living out of a suitcase." The travel would be out-of-state sales job and would most likely pay $75-100k/year (but for so Cal COL). How many out there would consider such an opportunity?
I would, in a heartbeat.
Prefer international travel, but travel, absolutely!
