The Federal Workers in Washington DC are a nervous wreak about having to stay home one day a week and only being able to work four days a week. Their pay would also be cut by 20%. They appear to be working pay check to paycheck and have no savings at all. Because of the sequester they will have to stay home one day a week (and not be paid for that day) until Congress passes a new budget.

How about you? If you are currently working full time and being paid for working 40 hours a week, could you survive working only four days a week and having your pay cut by 20%?

I am semi retired now but remember back when I was working full time I had to take off one day a week during a slow period for the company I worked at. My pay was also cut 20%. This lasted for a year. I LOVED IT! I adjusted my expectation and took lots of long weekend trips and really enjoyed the four day work week.

How about you, would you like to work four days a week but have your pay cut by 20%?

Only if I were making well over six figures. If I was living responsibly and saving mostly, I'd probably not even notice the drop.

At my pay level now? I would not like that at all and would find a new job ASAP.

Default There will be no cuts!

Neither party is prepared to do the right thing. The can will be kicked down the road. AGAIN!

Well, I'm not currently working, and my "income" has been cut severely. I'm doing fine.

At my last job, I could easily have worked a 4-day week for 80% pay, and wondered why more companies don't consider this option, instead of laying of across the board.

But there was a time when I had stretched to buy my first house, and the small company I worked for gave everyone a 5% pay cut, but we still worked a 40 hour week. That was very tough. A 20% cut would have been awful and I might have had to borrow from family to meet minimum expenses.

If I had to take a 20% pay cut and a day off I could survive. But you can be damn sure I would be done with 10-12 hour days. They wouldn't get one second of my time over 32 hours per week.

I could survive if they cut me to half pay. If people are living so close to the edge they can't endure a small drop in income (20%) then they are overextended.

Together, my boyfriend and I make $60K a year and pay $900 in rent for a one-bedroom apartment in a nice area of Southern California. We keep our expenses to a minimum, but take time to enjoy ourselves frugally. (Sure, we don't have the glitzy houses and condos around us, but we are snug where we are.) I could definitely take 4 day work weeks and feel that my job would be just fine.

Another blanket statement from you with no basis in fact. I'm sure most of them will do just fine.

A lot of companies also use layoffs as a way to get rid of people they don't like (for whatever reason).

Would I work a 4 day week for 80% of my current pay? HELL YES!!!!
