I was just hired and will be starting next week. The feeling of relief that I had upon finding out was wonderful. After the second interview, I strongly believed I was the top candidate (not to brag; that is not always the case). It was nice to get the call that I was officially hired. In my case, that call was from a local staffing agency and the position is temp to perm. The last position I had started the same way and resulted in a 10+ year job (was laid off last year), so I am fine with that and very appreciative of the persistence of the agency that assisted me. The commute is a reasonable 12 miles.

There are still many unemployed people out there and do not be discouraged. The average length of unemployment is 37 weeks, but the median is just 18 weeks meaning there are a good percentage of people finding work sooner now rather than later.

One of the significant advantages an out of work person has over a job seeker that is currently employed is that we can start right away and they are supposed to give two weeks notice. I emphasized it near the start of the first interview and again at the end. This can be an important "tie breaker", especially for a small or medium size firm that needs to bring someone aboard quickly. If the two candidates are equal in other ways, they may very well select you because you can start "the very next day if needed". So do not forget to mention that when interviewing. Usually they ask, but not always. You will want to do the other common sense things (dress, punctuality, eye contact, research the firm) as well. I recommend using a staffing agency. They have connections that can help you get hired sooner.

I just wanted to offer encouragement to those that are unemployed. The economy appears to be improving in most places. Good luck!

Good for you! I'm also using a staffing agency and there have been some leads to come from it. I think things are improving too.

Glad to hear the good word. It's definitely tough out there. Those long length of unemployment sound down right scary. Work hard and give it your all. Hope the position goes permanent for ya
