No kidding. It amazes me that so many people think it's fine to chat on the phone half of the day. That's not what you are paid for. You obviously aren't concentrating on your job when you are blabbering away on the phone.

It's so funny how a lot of you guys are so process oriented. Who gives a s*** who takes calls at work and who doesn't. Makes more sense to be results oriented. If people are doing the job well, who cares what they're doing. Are you all robots that never take a break? If not, then you're a hypocrite talking about "time theft".

Very thankful I don't work where they put you on a leash like some of you have to put up with.

^^^Agreed. Who cares what the nature of someones calls are about if the job is getting done? Mind your own business, and concentrate on your own tasks.

How do you concentrate on your own work tasks when the person in the cubicle next to you is yammering LOUDLY on the phone with their loved ones? That is disruptive and it does affect productivity.

This assumes that you are being paid for your time. Plenty of jobs aren't based on time. Plenty of employers focus on work + life balance. They want you to be happy so they support your personal matters in any way they can.

There are always going to be exceptions, but for the most part, taking non-emergency personal calls on the company phone is an example of bad work ethic and unprofessionalism. I keep my iPhone on vibrate and will only answer if it's my parents or husband. I haven't received a personal call on a company line in years. If someone (other than the aforementioned) wants to speak with me, they can call, leave a voicemail and I'll return their call when I get a break.

Agreed! Darn few situations are so important that they can't wait until your break time, or after work. Unfortunatly, some people have a real problem with that thing called, "prioritization".

All the places I have worked when family members called we all know each other and will chat and say hi and it isn't a problem. I would hate to work in such a place that some of you guys talk about. The only exception was when I worked at a horse rental and pony ride place for the summer and we didn't have phones other than our cells. So I just called on my cell between customers. My husband also came and visited and that was also fine. It seems so odd to spend 30 or 40 hours a week at a place that you can't talk to your family or make friends with co workers....bizarro world.

WHY does that seem so bizarre? OMG....it's called "work". If your employer is paying you by the hour and you start work at 8:00 a.m., you are entitled to a 15 min break, usually at 10:00 a.m. You would then have lunch at 12:00 p.m., clock back in from lunch at 12:30 p.m., then work until 2:30 p.m. All of this is assuming you are working an 8 hr day. You get a "paid" 15 min break and do not get paid for lunch.

Breaking it down, you are being paid for 8 hrs, while technically only working 7 hr 45 min. You are generally also allowed to use the bathroom, get a drink of water or juice on their time, if need be. Why should it be considered so BIZARRE for you to actually be productively working (or looking for something to do) while you're at work?

Personally, I think it's completely bizarre to feel as if it's A-okay to make or receive personal calls while you're at work......WHILE someone is paying you to do a job for them. Like I said, if there's an emergency and someone needs to reach you, it's one thing. It is appalling, the number of people who will actually use their employer's time to sit/stand and carry on casual telephone conversations, multiple text or pic messages....ON their employer's dollar. As another poster already stated.....it is THEFT.
