Years ago I was fired from a job I held for 4 years. Finding a new job was nearly impossible because everytime I got close to being hired at a new employer, they would call my old boss and the HR team at my last job and were told I was fired for cause and not eligible for rehire. The job offer was then withdrawn.
I told my Uncle about this and he told me his small business did not have any job for me at that time but he would act as my previous employer for the last four years and help me out and of course not tell them he was my uncle.
Within a few months I found a new job and my background investigation went fine.
(Five years later my Uncle's company has grown and I am now working for him, but that is another story)
What do you think of my dishonesty in saying I worked for my Uncle's company for those four years instead of continuing to tell the truth and say I had worked at the company that fired me? What would you do?
Yes, I have done exactly what you are talking about. My first layoff in 2009 was a split on not so friendly terms, and I have on my resume my friend who works there as my supervisor rather than the actual guy and he always gives me a great reference.
Nothing wrong with what you did. People get fired or quit all the time. Does that mean they have to have "the scarlet letter" on their forehead forever? They are never to have a second chance? More employers abuse their power than employees do. Employers abuse their power solely for the reason that they can. HR are worthless...useless and ridiculous. They only exist to defend the employer, even if that employer was or is evil. HR was just as responsible for the Recession as the Big Banks and Big Corporations. HR is in bed forever with them all. Are you kidding? -??-
Good for you. People do things like what you did all the time.
The 99% needs to take back their power. This is a start.
Trust me, the worst you can do is nothing compared to the worst that HR and Big Corp does.
They ARE the Inquisition.
Maybe they should stop asking for references at jobs. It really can be faked.
I applaud anyone who can bypass this system. So many are laid off or fired for no good reason and spend months trying to get back to work.
I agree, do what you can to get yourself on an even playing field.
That's almost as good as using a friend of mine who was a doctor to give me a doctors note saying that I was sick while I was out looking for a job. I was interviewing for my first big sales job out of college and was trying to get out the call center/cubicle farm I worked at. Had to do one more interview out of state but my boss said that if I missed one more day of work I was fired. Did not want to chance losing the job, so had my friend give me a doctor's note. You could see the smoke coming out of my boss's ears when I gave him the doctor's note the day I returned. But I got the job and left a week later.
"...they would call my old boss and the HR team at my last job and were told I was fired for cause and not eligible for rehire"
Your old boss had absolutely no business giving out this information. You could SUE them for saying this.
Anyway, well done on your subterfuge! I agree with the above posters, do whatever it takes.
You have to do what you have to do. What's the alternative? Never get a job again due to that one unfortunate situation and then become homeless?
Exactly. Besides, employers lie to their employees all of the time. When I was laid off a few years ago, the boss actually discussed in a meeting with us a few weeks before I was let go that staffing was adequate and that they were doing fine. Sure enough, I along with several other people got the ax due to "a slowdown in business."
I would lie to get a job in a heartbeat and not feel guilty about it later. Most employers are slime anyway.
BTW, if you can't get someone to fill in as a reference for you, there are actually websites that will do it for you for $100 or so.

I agree with the above posters - none of us have the "perfect past" that employers so often insist on, and as difficult it is to get a job these days, I think you did awesome with getting your uncle to go to bat for you - this is the kind of thing that more people need to do to circumvent the HR monster...lol.
You have to do what you have to do in order to make it.... I dont think its horrible like the people above said whats the alternative... Now where do I go get a bigger family to help a girl out LOL
