i work in an environment where the direct supervisor/manager, the one that handles all performance reviews in the department, hangs out with select few employees (all subordinates) for drinks, leisurely trips, etc.
now those subordinates may not be necessarily kissing up to management, but then i just feel that what the manager is doing is unethical. if they were all management level, then of course why not.
what do you think of this? should i start pushing myself that way (hanging out for drinks, leisurely trips, etc) to assure my position in the company? maybe in the real world, what's ethical doesnt necessarily mean that's how it should work
It does not affect you at all and is none of your business.
I could see how the boss being friendly with them could potentially lead to them having better performance reviews then they otherwise would, but there is no reason why it should effect your performance review in any way.

If they are not romantically involved, this is not unethical.
This happens everywhere. My boss is friendly with some of the employees, including outside of work, I think. She's very fair with all of us, though. It's a non-issue.
It doesn't where I work. I always get decent and fair reviews despite not being a personal friend of the boss. I guess it depends on the character of the manager in question. Some are able to be objective and professional.
but wont it affect the fairness when it comes to performance reviews?
Who knows. If it does, then that is an issue. But you can't just assume it will. Humans are social by nature. And some are going to get along better with some than others. You can't just eliminate that.
