I've just been offered a job with a respected nonprofit agency. The role is grant-funded for a period of two years. After that, the grant will either carry on, the position will be cut, or they will find the money to pay for the position from the agency's own funds. The pay is pretty good.
I have an interview later this week with another company. The job title sounds better, but the pay is close to the same (I've checked). But it is a permanent position, but would require a longer commute and longer work days.
Both positions seem very interesting. The nature of the work and the people seem phenomenal - plus, both are in the same industry.
It's up to you. Where does each job possibly fit in your long term plans?
The permanent position may not be all that permanent and you could possibly voluntarily leave after a few years just because you want a change or the environment doesn't suit you.
One good thing about the two year job is that it will be an easier exit after two years and you won't get so comfortable that you stop looking forward to the future. You have a set time frame to get yourself ready for your next big career move.
Take the job that's been offered - you have no guarantee the second one will offer you a position. If the pay is the same, the hours are shorter and less commute...I see no doubt here. These days no position is 'permanent' and if you know the second one ends at 2 years you have plenty of time to consider your next move if need be.
There's an old saying, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."
You have the one job in hand, the other is still out there in the bush. Unless you get another offer IMMEDIATELY as in tomorrow, take the first job offer.
