Are you this way? I'm sure it's my upbringing, raised on a farm by a big, Catholic family.

I've known so many people at work who are so forgiving of incompetence and laziness simply because that worker is a "good guy" or "good gal".

I can definitely seperate the two but I don't let it influence the way I deal with them professionally, for instance when I am on hiring panels I don't give a pass to the likeable person with a poor work ethic. I do see it happen ALOT though, many people rather work with the easy going person who doesn't do much versus the ******* who may be very good. It is a tough balance but ultimately I think either extreme is detrimental to getting the work accomplished and the organization's culture.

What defines a bad work ethic to you?

I'll speak for them ... ANYONE that doesn't believe exactly like I do.

Just a guess, but I am probably spot on.

You don't have to like 'em, really.

But, treat them kindly as a Christian was raised to do.
Wish 'em well always in your mind...keep your thoughts in
the non-judging mode...
we don't know why they are this way...so no judging...you stay 'clean' and
free of that.
I was raised Catholic. also.

I think there are some things that are universally and generally accepted as having a bad work ethic:

-Untimely work products
-Constantly late to work and/or leaving early (I've seen some that just don't show up)
-Not taking responsibility for work products/projects
-Consistently sloppy and inaccurate work products (this is a biggie in my field of budget/finance)

Those are some of the common ones off the top of my head.

The Bible doesn't tell you that you can't judge others.

Matthew 7:1–5 a warning against hipocritical judgment.

Quote:
Judge not, that ye be not judged.
However, we are commanded in the Bible to judge our brothers:

Leviticus 19:15 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.

Psalm 37:30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.

John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

In fact, everyone is prejudiced. You can't get thru life without judging people, nor are you expected to.

Guess it's a good thing you don't have to "like" anyone you work with. You are paid to work with them, not like them.

Being a good guy or good gal has nothing to do with competence. I can state a person is very nice, but if they're incompetent, and I can't bring them up to speed, they have to go.

Bad work ethic - someone who doesn't take the job seriously, doesn't write things down, misses deadlines, doesn't check their work, has attendance problems, etc.

JohnnyMack, I'm guessing you're not in management.

+1. OPs personal opinion of his/her coworker(s) is irrelevant to the task at hand.
