Maybe we are just polite enough that those earning more don't want to rub it in the noses of those making less, with a range of over $100,000 to minimum wage or just social security in the group. Usually chat revolves around the younger kids, weather, the ailments of the elders, spots, and catching up with other relatives not present from those that have been on more recent contact with them.
I agree Hemlock. Especially in larger cities like here in New York. For many years wages have failed to keep up with COLA. Many parents I know around my age bracket are taking second jobs out here.

I can't imagine how nice it would be to work in an environment where everyone has plenty of money and enjoys their work.
Well at least your co-workers and you have something in common. Imagine co-workers making 3 times more then you do doing the same kind of work!!

It can be depressing not to have enough money to pay the bills. However, I have met people who make six figures and are flat broke. Americans in general, are extremely materialistic and spend more than they make. They line up for the latest Iphone even though they have a perfectly functioning phone.

The majority of people out there don't enjoy their job, but you should never give up dreaming and hunting for that job you enjoy. Once you give up, then you will remain stuck in your job. I also think keeping a positive attitude regardless of whether or not you enjoy your job is important. People hate complainers and whiners....including future employers.

I think part of the problem is that we have come to a world where no matter the effort it doesn't pay off so people don't care and put in the least amount of effort. It's not like they were gonna get the promotion anyway...

.
Six figures goes much further in certain areas than others. Generally, the more people make the more they're likely to spend on non-essentials that keeps them in the poor house. I've never earned more than 70k in a year, and right now I'm in a position making less than 50k, but saving money has never been an issue because my spending habits are consistent. I look at higher salaries as a chance to save more, not spend more.

I think that many who live paycheck to paycheck higher on the economic ladder have issues with jonzing more so than high COL areas. I wont deny that the high COL does play but it is not as common as one would think.Part of it relies or reckless spending such as McMansions, expansive cars and buying gadgets like the latest tablets (Apple iPad or not.)

I once had a job (sales) where most of my co-workers netted anywhere from $8-$12K a month & believe it or not, there would be some of them that griped about their whole paycheck being spent before they even got it.

Now did they spend it on legitimate needs or was it $30 at the bar, $70 for a carton of cigarettes, $40 at the strip club, ect?

People with obsessions about money exist in every profession and every income level.

I agree with you on the first part, a car that runs and clothes that are neat and comfortable (from Costco) is all you need.

I don't agree with the second part. Yes, there are some places that may be that way but not the whole world. We do an annual performance review and the manager/supervisor has a range to work with. Putting out a lot of effort is rewarded by a higher raise. For example, doing the bare minimum might get you 1%, while someone that is going beyond may get 3-4%.

I do also still see internal promotions a lot, here and with friends and relatives in their jobs. I have had two in 5 years here and have given 2 to people reporting to me in that time. We only announce it outside if no qualified internal candidates.
