Another thing--last place I worked and this one--people will make mention of, "Oh no, I might be fired." I've heard it 3 times (and I only work part-time). Why give anyone that power? Play it cool. Years ago, the employer was glad they had you!!

you need to specify more what your talking about. how a company as a whole treats employees, how management treats employees or just overwall how everyone treats each other? any specific industry you notice this in?

And they are not just joking around? There are people at my work that say this but they are obviously joking around when they say it. One guy claims he is going to quit and go work at some retail store...it's all laughs though.

I feel lucky to enjoy my job and the small crew i work with. The pay could be better, but i wouldn't trade it for the
tight nit group we have and the trust of having each others back..and that's from the TOP down.

Basically 5 grunts like me in the field, 2 woman in the office and the Owner who is only in town 1 week a month..
The owner was raised here but lives on the West Coast with his family but has another home here local..

We all know what's going on with each other, family stuff and such..which is cool as if something comes up with ones family, we can take time off to take care of what means most, and that's family.

I only ***** about the hours (in the winter) with snow plowing and throwing your whole sleep cycle outta whack..

That can be draining and stressful, but i wouldn't trade my job for another even if it meant a pay raise. I don't have to pay a
copay for my health coverage, they pay it 100% and have about 30 paid days off a year.. Not bad.

I like the environment of a small privately owned company..No BS, No PC police..just taking care of business..

And really old school as we don't put crap on the net about us..

I felt like posting this after reading some of the horror posts.. There is hope out there if your in an unbearable environment..
When yeah find a place that you can call home you will know it, until then suck it up as other posters have mentioned..your
8 and out! and i don't blame yeah for a second. If your not appreciated then do the bare minimum..

Sounds like you've found your niche! Congratulations. I've found and lost mine several times now but when everything flows well - you know you're in the right place.

Absolutely true.
I had MY niche before starting my own company - and have built my niche once again. Prior to this, I worked for an answering service on overnight shift. I dispatched emergency calls from a bunker. And in bad weather, there were times I did not see the outside of that bunker for forty hours in a row, because relief could not get in, and the emergencies still had to be dispatched. The company I worked for eventually got sold, and I got paid a consultant fee to go out of state for three weeks, and train my job replacements.

By that time, I'd finished my schooling for my current work, and was able to launch my company.

In case nobody guessed...MY niche is working all alone, in a bunker, overnights, and many, many hours in a row, but only a few days a week.
Now I process and submit insurance claims for doctors, and advise on implementation of EHR systems. I keep doctors in compliance with HIPAA regulations, and various aspects of ACA, aka Obamacare. The scope of my business can best be defined as "Practice Management Specialist."

What I remember about my retail job from the 90’s:

-Pictures of people at each other’s houses for parties were posted in the break room.

-Supervisors and managers did not flaunt their positions –they worked directly with you and there was a strong vibe of everyone being equals. I don’t remember seeing ANY butt kissing behavior from anyone at any time during my time there.

-The biggest thing I remember about what made that job so special was that laughter and joking around were a part of every day. Examples: A co-worker and I went out for the nightly cart run. On the way around the mall, he grabbed a basket out on display at another company and briefly walked with it as if he was going to steal it, before putting it back. Another time, this same co-worker and I were working outside and throwing away a bunch of junk from the stockroom. A manager came by to tell us to even out where we were throwing this stuff into the dumpster, so that the weight was evenly distributed. My co-worker turns to me and goes: “Duh. What does he think we’re going to do, throw all of it into the left side of the dumpster so it topples over”? On another occasion, a co-worker drove up through the parking lot with Bryan Adams’ “Please Forgive Me” playing at full volume and gets out of the car smirking. Also, one time I had to help a supervisor in another department move something because he told me he had a bad back. My supervisor asked me why I was helping the guy and I gave him the reason and he replied in a slightly exasperated way that was kind of comical: “He doesn’t have a bad back”.

The last point is what I remember so fondly about that job and that era. It was what made working there so enjoyable but throughout all of it, we always made sure that the customers were helped quickly and took that seriously. I don’t remember ever minding going into work aside from getting stuck with the dreaded 1pm-9:30pm Saturday night shift.

1. Managers who don't know how to manage. Many of them were promoted to management because they had to be promoted and the only way to promote them is into management -- and they don't train them how to be managers. Management is a very different skill set and there is a learning curve. It may have nothing to do with your degree or training.

2. Co-workers are pitted against each other. There is a lot of backstabbing going on.

3. The attitude of: "If you don't like it, leave." In other words, your work means nothing. You are always expendable. This does not contribute to employee morale.

4. The attitude that you must work all the time and be always available. There are plenty of people now who must work from home on PTO days and must even be available on their vacations. They must answer emails and texts immediately and be glued to the cellphone. Workers work through their lunch hours. People are exhausted. They never have time off from work. But they do it, because they are terrified of losing their jobs.

5. Many jobs are very repetitive now. You are glued to a computer all day and may have little interaction with others.

No, they're not joking at all. Said after certain situations developed. The workplace isn't what it used to be unless people are in denial.
