I work directly under my RE. He’s a good guy, I like him a lot. The last few days, he’s been out of town on a business trip. The person left in charge is the assistantRE. He’s an old guy that’s been doingthis for 30 years.
So, one of the things that you have to get used to workingunder the assistant RE is he doesn’t like computer printouts. He will only take reports that arehandwritten. He calls computer printouts“fake reports”. It doesn’t matter if youdid your calculations using MS excel or autocad, he won’t accept them. A few months ago, one of the guys here didsome calculations in an excel spreadsheet, and the assistant RE rejected hisreport and made him re-write everything out by hand. Same numbers and everything. Just hand-written. Thank goodness I report directly to the REand not the assistant RE.
Anyway, one of the things the assistant RE takes pride in ishis nitpicky ways. A report must havepage numbers, for example. An inspectionreport must have exact locations and weather conditions. Things like that, which I agree with. The past few days, I’ve been checking people’swork in the office, and I noticed that half of the assistant RE’s reports ain’tgot no page numbers on them. And what’sworse, a whole bunch of them ain’t got no locations. This is annoying because I gotta go aroundtracking down which sites he inspected on those dates and all the other missinginfo so I can fill them in for him.
I’ve been annoyed at the assistant RE because of his adamantobjection to using technology at work. All my work have been flawless because a lot of the calculations are doneby a computer program that I have written. My boss the RE loves it because it takes human error out of a lot of thework. But the assistant RE have beenvery vocal about if it was up to him then I’m gone. He strongly wants everythinghandwritten. And he would have betterfootings (at least with me) had I not found so many errors in his work. As a demonstration of how reliable my programis, I turned it on other people’s work and found their errors.
This is always a danger with old dogs. They’ve been at their job for so long thatthey are top dogs in their fields. Butat the same time, they are so set in their ways that all new and sometimesbetter ideas are struck down.

That's a generalization. Some are not open to newer ways, and some are. Perhaps your RE can have a chat with him about how it's done now and for consistency, it should be done the same way while RE is out of the office.
But please don't say or type "ain't got no". This is a double negative, and sounds ignorant.

Well, the Ass. RE has been at this job for some 30+ years. Even the RE has to give some way to him.

But it's my favorite grammatically incorrect phrase. I ain't gonna change.
I would think that you need to clear this up with the RE before when he comes back. Something to the effect of 'When you are out am I still supposed to prepare my reports to your standards or to the Assistants standards? I'm assuming he knows about the assistants 'quirks'. How he answers the question will determine a lot.
DO these reports have to be filed electronically for future retreval? I would hate for anyone to have to go back and read hand written reports I wrote later, and my kids handwriting is even worse.
An engineer who obstinately prefers handwritten calculations to excel or other computer generated reports? Slower, less legible, less accurate.
I really hope you are not one of my consultants.
Well, don't judge all of us because of one old guy in the office. Our RE is as tech savy as any techie out there. It's the Ass. RE that's against technology. He's old school.
Edit.
Don't get me wrong. This guy is a fountain of knowledge. Sometimes, I wish we could grind him up and absorb his experience and knowledge.

If he is a partner in the firm he is also going to be there for as many years as he likes.

The assistant RE is hypocritical.
